  Jonathan Baker

Barrister and solicitor, received his B.A. degree from Amherst College (1960) and holds LL.B and Juris Doctor Degrees from the Law School of the University of Pennsylvania (1963). A member of the Vancouver and Canadian Bar Associations and the Law Society of British Columbia, he specializes in Administrative, Land Use Planning, Zoning and Municipal Law. In 1986 he was elected Alderman of the City of Vancouver and served two terms.

He has represented over many years a number of major clients in the agriculture, mining and development industries. Baker is the author of: Real Estate Development Practice Manual : Ch. 9 The Vancouver Charter, CLE, BC 1993, 1996; Limitation and Notice Requirements of the Municipal Act, CLE, BC 1992; Notice of Claims Provisions: The Basis for Attack on Equality Rights Grounds, The Advocate, November 1985; Fighting City Hall with the Equality Provisions of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, The Advocate, January 1985; Discretionary Zoning, Sun Publishing, March 1977

He is active in both civic and political affairs. Baker was a founding trustee and first program Director of the Vancouver Academy of Music; In the early 1970s he was the Senior Social Planner for the City of Vancouver; He was appointed by the Premier of the Province in the eighties to a committee that proposed amendments to the Municipal Act, by the Province. As well he was involved in establishing Vancouver's Heritage Conservation Program. He is a founder of the Contemporary Art Galley; founding trustee and first program director of the Vancouver Academy of Music; and past Trustee of Granville Island where he was instrumental in proposing its land use plan; Trustee of both the Vancouver School Board and Vancouver Community College; Director of the P.N.E. and Director of the Vancouver Public Library.
